Funeral plans and funeral costs
The honest guide to paying for a funeral in advance: pre-paid plans, over-50s policies, life cover and simple savings. What each route does well, and where each one disappoints.
There are four main ways to make sure a funeral is paid for: a pre-paid funeral plan, an over-50s life insurance plan, ordinary life cover, and earmarked savings. Each suits a different situation, and the marketing around the first two is often louder than the substance. We help you compare the routes honestly. Where an insurance product is the right answer, we can advise on and arrange it. Where a pre-paid plan is the right answer, we signpost you to FCA-authorised plan providers, since 2022 the pre-paid plan market has been regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
Who this is for
- You want the certainty that your funeral is paid for and organised, so your family does not carry the cost or the decisions.
- You have seen over-50s plan advertising and want a straight answer on whether it is good value for you.
- You are helping an older parent decide between a pre-paid plan and other options.
- You already have life cover and want to know whether anything extra is actually needed.
What funerals cost
A basic funeral in the UK typically runs to several thousand pounds, with costs varying by region and by burial versus cremation, and discretionary extras (flowers, cars, catering, memorials) adding more. Costs have generally risen over time. The bill usually falls due quickly, often before probate releases money from the estate, which is why advance provision helps families practically as well as financially.
Pre-paid funeral plans, now FCA-regulated
A pre-paid plan lets you pay for a defined set of funeral services at today's prices, with the money held in trust or insurance arrangements until needed. Since July 2022 pre-paid funeral plans have been regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA): providers must be authorised, and the regulation brought conduct standards and Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection to a market that previously had neither. Check that any provider is FCA-authorised before paying. Read what is and is not included carefully, burial plots and some third-party costs are commonly excluded. Major Money Matters does not sell pre-paid plans; where one is the right answer we say so and point you to authorised providers.
Over-50s plans, the small print that matters
Over-50s plans are whole-of-life policies with guaranteed acceptance, no medical questions, paying a fixed lump sum on death. The convenience is real, and so are the catches: live a long time and you can pay in more than the policy pays out; stop paying and cover usually lapses with nothing back; and most plans pay nothing except return of premiums if death occurs in the first one or two years. For people in reasonable health, underwritten whole-of-life or term cover is often better value. We compare both before recommending either.
Life cover and savings, the unglamorous contenders
If you already hold life cover, a funeral-sized portion of it may make a separate product unnecessary, especially if the policy is written in trust so money reaches the family quickly. Equally, accessible savings earmarked for the purpose carry no exclusions and no lapse risk. The right answer is often the boring one, and we will tell you when it is.
How Major Money Matters helps
Specific things we do for this product. No generic platitudes.
Compare all four routes honestly
Pre-paid plan, over-50s policy, life cover, savings. We set out the costs and catches of each for your age, health and budget, including the routes we do not sell.
Advise on the insurance options
Where an over-50s plan, whole-of-life or term policy is the right answer we advise on it and arrange it with a range of insurers, with trusts set up so money reaches the family fast.
Signpost authorised plan providers
Where a pre-paid plan fits best, we point you to FCA-authorised providers and tell you what to check in the plan terms before you commit.
Check what you already have first
Many families already hold cover that does this job. We review existing policies before recommending anything new, and sometimes the advice is to buy nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Are funeral plans regulated?
Yes. Pre-paid funeral plans have been regulated by the FCA since July 2022. Providers must be FCA-authorised, conduct rules apply, and Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection is in place. Always check the provider is FCA-authorised before handing over money.
Does Major Money Matters sell pre-paid funeral plans?
No. We advise on the insurance-based routes (over-50s plans, whole-of-life and term cover) and compare them honestly against pre-paid plans and savings. Where a pre-paid plan is the best fit, we say so and signpost you to FCA-authorised providers.
Are over-50s plans good value?
Sometimes. Acceptance without medical questions has genuine value for people who could not pass underwriting. For people in reasonable health, underwritten cover is often cheaper for the same sum. The known weaknesses are paying in more than the pay-out if you live long, and losing cover if premiums stop.
What does a pre-paid plan typically not cover?
Commonly excluded items include burial plots, some third-party fees, memorials, flowers and catering, depending on the plan tier. The plan document lists exactly which services are guaranteed. Reading that list is the single most important step before buying.
Can the family get funeral money before probate?
Often yes. Banks will usually pay a funeral invoice directly from the deceased's account on sight of the death certificate and invoice, and life policies written in trust pay out without waiting for probate. A pre-paid plan removes the question entirely because the funeral is already paid.
What happens to a pre-paid plan if the provider fails?
Because the market is FCA-regulated, customer money must be held in trust or insurance arrangements and Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection can apply if an authorised provider fails. This is a key reason to use only FCA-authorised providers.
