Major Money Matters Ltd ("we", "us", "our") is the data controller for personal information you provide to us. We use that information to provide mortgage and protection advice, to submit applications to lenders and insurers on your behalf, and to meet our regulatory record-keeping obligations.

What we collect and why

To give you regulated mortgage and protection advice we need information about your personal circumstances, your finances, your property and the cover or borrowing you are looking for. Typical categories include identity and contact details, employment and income, expenditure and credit commitments, property details, health and lifestyle information for protection cases, and the records of our advice meetings and recommendations.

We collect this information directly from you, from documents you provide (payslips, bank statements, ID, tax returns) and, with your authority, from third parties such as lenders, insurers, credit reference agencies, fraud prevention agencies and your employer.

Lawful basis for processing

We process your data under the following lawful bases:

  • Contract: to provide mortgage and protection advice services.
  • Legal obligation: to comply with FCA and anti-money laundering requirements.
  • Legitimate interests: to improve our services and marketing, where appropriate.
  • Consent: for marketing communications. You can withdraw consent at any time.

Who we share your data with

We share your information only where it is necessary to deliver the service you have asked for or to meet a legal or regulatory obligation. Recipients can include:

  • Mortgage lenders, protection providers and general insurers we approach on your behalf.
  • Sesame Ltd, our principal firm, which provides our regulatory permissions and supervises our advice.
  • The Financial Conduct Authority and other regulators, where required.
  • Credit reference agencies, fraud prevention agencies, and HMRC where required.
  • Conveyancing solicitors, surveyors and protection administrators introduced as part of your case, with your consent.
  • Our regulated software, CRM and IT providers acting as our processors under written agreement.

We do not sell your data, and we do not pass it to third parties for their own marketing.

Your rights under UK GDPR

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation, you have the right to:

  • Access your personal data.
  • Rectify inaccurate personal data.
  • Erase your personal data (the right to be forgotten), subject to our legal record-keeping obligations.
  • Restrict processing of your personal data.
  • Data portability.
  • Object to processing.
  • Not be subject to automated decision-making.

Data retention

We retain your personal data for:

  • Client records: 6 years from the end of the relationship (FCA requirement).
  • Marketing contacts: until you unsubscribe, or 3 years from last contact.
  • Website analytics: 26 months.

International transfers

Your data is primarily processed within the UK. If we transfer data outside the UK, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place as required by UK GDPR.

Security

We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to keep your information secure, including access controls, encryption in transit, reputable cloud hosting in the UK and EU, and ongoing staff training on data protection and information security.
