Children's critical illness cover
A lump sum if your child is diagnosed with a defined serious illness, so a parent can stop working and be at the hospital without the household finances collapsing.
When a child is seriously ill, most parents stop working, immediately and for as long as it takes. Children's critical illness cover pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a defined condition, funding time off work, travel and accommodation near a specialist hospital, and home adaptations. In the UK it is rarely bought as a standalone policy: most adult critical illness policies include children's cover automatically, and several insurers offer enhanced children's cover as a paid upgrade. The real job is knowing what your policy includes and whether it is enough.
Who this is for
- You have, or are about to have, children and are reviewing critical illness cover.
- You hold an older critical illness policy and do not know what children's cover it includes, if any.
- You want stronger children's cover than the standard built-in amount, with broader child-specific conditions.
- One parent's income would stop entirely if a child needed months of hospital treatment.
How children's cover is usually structured
Most adult critical illness policies automatically cover the policyholder's children, typically from around birth or 30 days old up to age 18 to 23, for a portion of the adult sum assured up to a cap, commonly in the region of £25,000 to £30,000 per child. A valid children's claim does not normally reduce the adult's own cover. Several insurers also offer enhanced children's cover as a paid option, with higher amounts and a longer list of child-specific conditions. Standalone children's policies are rare in the UK market; the upgrade route is how stronger cover is usually bought.
What a pay-out is actually for
A child's serious illness rarely creates one big bill; it creates months of small ones and a sudden income gap. Parents take unpaid leave, drive or stay near a specialist hospital, pay for parking, food and childcare for siblings, and sometimes adapt the home. The lump sum exists so those months are not also a financial crisis, and so a parent can be at the bedside without negotiating with an employer about it.
Conditions and definitions vary, again
As with adult cover, wording matters more than headline numbers. Insurers differ on the number of child-specific conditions covered (cancer is the largest claim area, alongside conditions like meningitis with lasting effects), on cover for pregnancy and birth complications, and on hospitalisation benefits that pay per night a child spends in hospital. Conditions present before the cover started, including some congenital conditions diagnosed earlier, are typically excluded, which is a strong argument for sorting cover before or early in a pregnancy.
Reviewing what you already have
If you hold critical illness cover written more than a few years ago, the children's element may be weaker than current policies offer, or absent. Newer policies frequently have richer children's benefits at similar premiums. We review existing policy schedules line by line and tell you plainly whether to keep, upgrade or replace, bearing in mind that replacing cover later in life or after health changes can cost more.
Where it fits in family protection
Children's cover is a complement to, not a substitute for, the core package of life cover, adult critical illness and income protection on the parents. The household's biggest financial risk is still a parent's death or long-term illness. We size the whole package together so the budget goes where the risk is.
How Major Money Matters helps
Specific things we do for this product. No generic platitudes.
Audit the children's cover you already hold
Send us the policy schedule and we will tell you what your current cover includes for children, what it excludes, and how it compares with today's policies.
Compare child wordings across insurers
Condition lists, age ranges, pregnancy complication cover and hospitalisation benefits differ widely. We compare the child element specifically, not just the adult policy.
Price the enhanced options honestly
Enhanced children's cover costs extra and is right for some families, not all. We show the uplift in pounds so you decide with the numbers in front of you.
Keep the whole package in proportion
We make sure children's cover sits on top of properly sized life, critical illness and income protection on the parents, not in place of it.
Frequently asked questions
Is children's critical illness cover automatically included in my policy?
Often, but not always, and the quality varies. Most current adult critical illness policies include children's cover up to a capped amount, typically around £25,000 to £30,000 per child. Older policies may include less or none. The schedule and policy wording give the definitive answer; we read them for you.
Can I buy a standalone policy just for my child?
Standalone children's critical illness policies are rare in the UK. The practical routes are the children's cover built into a parent's policy and the enhanced children's options several insurers sell as an upgrade. We compare both against what you hold now.
Does a children's claim reduce my own cover?
Usually no. On most policies a valid children's claim is paid in addition to the adult sum assured, which remains intact. Policy wordings differ, so we confirm this when comparing insurers.
What ages are covered?
Typically from birth or 30 days old until somewhere between 18 and 23, often with the upper age extended for children in full-time education. Ranges vary by insurer and by whether you take standard or enhanced children's cover.
Are conditions from birth covered?
Conditions diagnosed before the cover started are typically excluded, and insurers treat congenital conditions differently. Cover taken out before or early in pregnancy generally puts the family in the strongest position. Disclose everything; we pre-assess any history before applying.
Would the pay-out affect NHS treatment?
No. The lump sum is yours to use however helps, alongside NHS care: time off work, travel and accommodation near a specialist unit, sibling childcare, private therapies or home adaptations. It is financial breathing room, not a replacement for treatment.
